LBCC Offers Driver Education Classes Winter Term

Several Driver Education classes are being offered winter term through Linn-Benton Community College Albany Community Education. The course includes Oregon state mandated 30 hours of classroom instruction, a three-hour parent/student orientation at first meeting plus 12 hours behind-the wheel practice and driver observation. Registration requirements include completed packet, fee, original driver permit and one photocopy. Registration packets are available at all centers one week prior to registration or online at www.linnbenton.edu/driver-education. First class session starts Jan. 6. Cost for the course is $259 for ages 17 and under, $429 for ages 18 and over. Class must be dropped 24 hours prior to start date for refund. Home & Garden Classes

A variety of home and garden classes will be offered Linn-Benton Community College’s Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers winter term. The free"Winter Gardening Series” will help you sharpen your gardening skills. This eight-week series taught by OSU Master Gardeners covers a wide variety of subjects of interest to the home gardener, with a different topic covered each week. Series meets Thursdays from Noon to 12:50 p.m. beginning Jan. 9. List of topics is available at the LBCC Lebanon Center. Not your typical gardening class, the "Effortless Gardening Workshop" offers instruction in the easy movements of the Feldenkrais Method of movement using tools and equipment with less pain. LBCC Lebanon Center Dog Training

"Dog Obedience" and “Puppy Kindergarten” classes will be held through the Linn-Benton Community College Lebanon Center starting Jan. 9. “Dog Obedience” covers basic commands and equipment, socialization, rewarding good behavior, breaking bad behavior, games and tricks, and responsible pet ownership. Veterinary shot records and dog history form are required. This 10-week class will meet at the Lebanon Senior Center, 80 Tangent St., Thursdays from 6:30-7:20 p.m. beginning Jan. 9. Cost is $39. "Puppy Kindergarten" is designed specifically for puppies 16-weeks and younger that are not fully vaccinated. Pain Relief Now Class

The class "Pain Relief Now" is being offered by the LBCC Lebanon Center starting Jan. 9. Class introduces self-help techniques for relief of musculoskeletal pain and addresses pain symptoms in your muscle groups and joints, and for arthritis. Learn active isolated stretch techniques to enhance joint function and return to a more useful movement pattern. This six-week class meets Thursdays from 10 to 10:50 a.m. beginning Jan. 9 at the Lebanon Senior Center, 80 Tangent Street. Cost is $32. Free Phlebotomy Information Sessions

Several free Phlebotomy Program information sessions will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College for those interested in training to become a phlebotomist. January session times and dates are Thursday, Jan. 9,10 a.m. to noon, and Wednesday, Jan. 22, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Additional sessions will be held Tuesday, Feb. 18, 1 to 3 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 26, noon to 2 p.m., and Monday, March 10, noon to 2 p.m. All sessions will be held at the LBCC Albany campus, Calapooia Center, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW. No preregistration is required to attend. Attendance at one of the information sessions is mandatory to register for the program. The 16-week Phlebotomy Program training starts July 28 and runs through Nov. 14, 2014 at the Lebanon Community Hospital Health Careers Training Center and the LBCC Lebanon Center. AARP Driver Safety Program



AARP Driver Safety Program is being offered through Linn-Benton Community College in Albany, Corvallis and Sweet Home starting Jan. 6. AARP’s program is designed to help develop and reinforce safe driving skills and techniques. Satisfactory completion of this class may qualify you for reduced auto insurance premiums (check with your insurance carrier). This one-week class will meet Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 6 and 7, from 8:30 to 11:45 a.m. at the Albany Senior Center, or at the Corvallis Senior Center. Class also will meet from 1 to 3:50 p.m. at the LBCC Sweet Home Center. Cost is $15 for AARP members, $20 for non-members. LBCC Life Stories Class



Learn how to tell your story and your family history in the “Life Stories” class offered through Linn-Benton Community College Community Education.

 Recall and recount treasured family history in your own narrative style, and learn how to write descriptively with details and dialogue. Information about publishing will be provided in class.

 This 10-week class will meet at the Albany Senior Center on Tuesdays from 2 to 3:50 p.m. beginning Jan. 7; at the Lebanon Center on Wednesdays from 2 to 3:50 p.m. beginning Jan.8; and at the Sweet Home Center on Thursdays from 2 to 3:50 p.m. beginning Jan.9. Cost is $58.

Polysomnographic Tech Free Information Sessions

Free information sessions for those interested in becoming a Polysomnographic Technologist, or sleep technician, will be held at Linn-Benton Community College. January sessions will be held Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2-4 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 15, 9-11 a.m., and Thursday, Jan. 30, 1-3 p.m. Additional sessions will be held Thursday, Feb. 13, 10 a.m.-noon, and Monday, Feb. 24, 11-1 p.m. All information sessions will be at the Albany campus in the Calapooia Center building, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany, OR. 97321. Attendance at one of the information sessions is mandatory before applying for the program. Legacy Letter Writing Class at Benton Center

The new class Write Your Legacy Letter is being offered at Linn-Benton Community College’s Benton Center starting Monday, Jan. 6. Legacy letters are a message that expresses a person’s values, life lessons and hopes and can be shared with family and friends at times of life transitions. Instructor Sharon Waldman, a personal historian, says legacy letters are for people who want to convey key beliefs and events of their lives but don’t have time to write an entire autobiography. Free Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions Class

A free workshop “Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions Self Management Program” will be held at the Linn-Benton Community College’s Lebanon Center starting Jan. 7. This six-week workshop is for people with ongoing health conditions such as diabetes, asthma, emphysema, heart conditions, high blood pressure, MS and other chronic health conditions. LBCC Professional Development Workshops

Business and Employer Services at Linn Benton Community College will offer two workshops in January as part of the series “Developing World Class Employees.” “Success Skills for Training Others On-The-Job” will help you learn how to train employees effectively by understanding different learning styles, exploring the five-step model for learning something new, developing effective training plans and giving feedback. Workshop will be held Tuesday, Jan. 7 from 8 a.m. to noon in the Fireside Room, Calapooia Center room CC-211, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. “Foundation of Communication” will help you learn effective communication skills to improve your ability to get the job done and develop high quality professional relationships. LBCC Real Estate Pre-License Broker Exam Course

A Real Estate Pre-License Broker Exam course will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College starting Jan. 8. Designed to prepare you for the Oregon Real Estate Brokers License Exam, this 150-hour course is the fastest way to qualify to take the state exam. The local real estate market is beginning to turn around. Now is the time to position yourself for the up-turn.  This 11-week course will meet Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. beginning Jan. 8 at the LBCC Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW. The course content will be mostly Internet based. Students are expected to have on-line capability, to self-study and attend all class sessions. A Real Estate Property Manager course will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College beginning Jan. 6. Designed to prepare you to manage rental property, this course combines online and in-class instruction to meet the 60-hour requirement for the Oregon Property Manager Pre-License course. Learn the basics of QuickBooks in classes offered through Linn-Benton Community College Small Business Development Center. “Guided Tour QuickBooks” is a four-hour class designed for those with no previous experience using a computer-based accounting system.  Class will meet on Jan. 9 and 16 from 2 to 3:50 p.m. in the LBCC Forum building, room F-202, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. The class “MicroBiz Explore” will be held through the Small Business Development Center at Linn-Benton Community College beginning January 14. Explore the possibilities of starting your own business. LBCC and Legacy Ballet Present “The Nutcracker”

Free orientation sessions for GED and Adult Basic Education classes held at Linn-Benton Community College’s Lebanon and Sweet Home Centers will begin December 9.   Classes can help you improve your skills in reading, writing or math, prepare to take the GED test, or improve your score on the Computerized Placement Test for college entry. Orientations will be held Dec. 10 and 11, Jan. 7 and 8, or Feb. 4 and 5 from 9 a.m. to 11:50 a.m., or from 6 p.m. to 8:50 p.m., at the LBCC Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way. Business Faculty Joseph Bailey Recertified as Certified Professional Facilitator

Joseph Bailey, instructor for Linn-Benton Community College Business and Employer Services, earned his recertification as a Certified Professional Facilitator from the International Association of Facilitators. 

 Bailey was one of the first professional facilitators certified in the state of Oregon. The designation of CPF is the only international assessment process that is based on rigorous peer review of knowledge, experience and demonstration of skills. LBCC Fall Choir Concert “Sing for Joy”

LBCC Choirs to attend World Choir Games

Two Linn-Benton Community College choir ensembles have been selected to compete in the eighth-annual World Choir Games held this coming July in Riga, Latvia. Students in LBCC’s Re-Choired Element Chamber Choir and Concert Choir, ranked amongst the top choirs in the world, will compete in three categories including Mixed Chamber Singers (a cappella), Musica Sacra A cappella, and Musica Contemporanea, with approximately 300 choirs from six continents and more than 60 countries competing. “This is truly a huge honor and a testament to the hard work of our absolutely wonderful choral students here at LBCC,” said LBCC Choral Activities Director James Reddan, “We feel so lucky to have this opportunity to represent our country at such an important and prestigious event with all of the world’s eyes on us.” Leading up to the competition, LBCC’s choirs will give invitational performances in Helsinki, Finland at the Senaatintori (Senate Church) in Senate Square and the St. Nicholas

Free Diabetes Symposium

A free Diabetes Symposium will be held at Linn-Benton Community College on Saturday, Nov. 16 from 8 a.m. to 1:50 p.m. in the Commons cafeteria, second floor of the Calapooia Center, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW., Albany. Diabetes experts will present information on self-management, and a product fair will feature diabetes equipment, services and free healthy snacks. LBCC Hosts 34th Annual Bob Ross Nature Photography Show

The 34th Annual Bob Ross Open Invitational Nature Photography Show will be held at Linn-Benton Community College on Friday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. in the Forum building, room F-104, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. This is a free, non-juried show and is open to anyone to attend, weather you are showing photographs or just want to see what others are doing in the field. This year’s theme is “On the Ground” or “Grounded.” Nature for this purpose is defined as plants, animals, landscapes, rocks, clouds, water or anything else that one finds in nature and that lacks any evidence of humans. No architecture, vehicles, hot air balloons or backpackers, ect. Nature photographers from throughout the Willamette Valley gather each year on this occasion to celebrate nature and share their experiences, techniques, favorite places and things to see. LBCC Hosts Parenting Educators for Training in Attentive Parenting

Parenting educators from nine agencies that serve families in Linn and Benton Counties attended a two-day training for the newly released Attentive Parenting curriculum, part of the Incredible Years® training initiative. Taught by Carolyn Webster-Stratton, the developer of The Incredible Years, this was the first training in the United States for Attentive Parenting. Oregon Shakespearian Festival actors Benjamin Pelteson and Eduardo Placer will give two free performances on Friday, Nov.8 at Linn-Benton Community College as part of the OSF School Visit Program, which is open to the public. The OSF actors will perform selections from Shakespeare’s Tempest as well as selections from more contemporary plays. The first one-hour show, An Adaptation of The Tempest,” will be from 10 to 10:50 a.m. and features Shakespeare characters from The Tempest, which will be part of the upcoming OSF 2013 – 2014 season. Linn-Benton Opera Guild Preview: Salome

The Linn-Benton Opera Guild will preview the opera Salome, by Richard Strauss, on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at 7:45 p.m. at 303 Benton Hall, Oregon State University campus, Corvallis. Forklift Safety Training

Forklift Safety Training will be offered through Business and Employer Services at Linn-Benton Community College Saturday, Nov. 16, from 8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the LBCC Albany Campus, IC building, IC-103, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany. This eight-hour course will provide four hours of classroom training and four hours of practice on the forklift. Training includes forklift safety, handling and moving loads, principles of lifting, stacking and un-stacking loads and driving with a load. Upon completion of eight hours of training and meeting the requirements, student will receive an award of completion to take to their current or future employer. LBCC Theater Production of “Macbeth – Movement Into Darkness”

Free Pharmacy Technician Information Sessions



LBCC is offering two free Pharmacy Technician Program pre-application information sessions for those interested in training to work as a Pharmacy Technician.

 The sessions will be held Monday, Oct. 28, from 9 to 11 a.m.; and Tuesday, Nov. 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the LBCC Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way. 

No need to pre-register to attend the session. Attendance at the session is mandatory in order to take the program.

The 18-week Pharmacy Technician Program starts Feb. 3 and runs through June 6, 2014. Skill areas covered include customer service, pharmacy math, pharmacy laws and rules, pharmaceutical vocabulary, prescriptions, billing, insurance, industry software, pharmacology and on-the-job training. Grand Opening for New Advanced Transportation Technology Center

Linn-Benton Community College will hold a Grand Opening for its new Advanced Transportation Technology Center at 2000 Oak Street in Lebanon on Wednesday, Oct. 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. Tours of the new facilities will be given after a brief program, which begins at 5:15 p.m. and is open to the public. The center is the only major broad-spectrum training facility between Seattle and San Francisco for students learning to service alternative fuel vehicles, and will serve as a first step toward creating a base for alternative fuel technology in the Willamette Valley. The facility has state-of-the-art diagnostic equipment including a dynamometer diagnostic tool, the only one of its kind between Vancouver, BC and San Francisco. LBCC automotive students and technicians already in the field will receive training at the center on vehicles that run on compressed natural gas, propane, electric and biodiesel as well as traditional fuel vehicles. Two free Veterinary Assistant Program information sessions will be held at Linn-Benton Community College for those interested in training to become a Veterinary Assistant. LBCC Driver Education Begins Oct. 14

Drivers Education classes at Linn-Benton Community College begin Oct. 14. The course includes Oregon state mandated 30 hours of classroom instruction, a three-hour parent/student orientation at first meeting plus 12 hours behind-the wheel practice and driver observation.  Registration requirements include completed packet, fee, original driver permit and one photocopy. Students must register at the college. Online registration is not available. Registration packets are available at all centers one week prior to registration or online at www.linnbenton.edu/driver-education. Cost for the course is $259 for ages 17 and under, $429 for ages 18 and over. Class must be dropped 24 hours prior to start date for refund. LBCC GED Testing Changes

Students working on getting their General Education Development (GED) certificate are encouraged to finish their testing as soon as possible. The current version of the GED tests will expire at the end of this year, and will be replaced Jan. 2, 2014 with a new test. To avoid having to start over, students must pass all five tests in reading, science, social studies, math and writing by the end of the year. Linn-Benton Community College offers GED classes to help you prepare to take the tests. You must attend a free two-session orientation before registering for classes. Orientation sessions will be offered the week of October 28, and GED classes will begin the week of November 4. There is a $30 enrollment fee due at registration. LBCC Hosts “Community Ground v.2” Exhibit

South Santiam Hall Gallery More than 25 art faculty from Clatsop, Mt. Hood and Linn-Benton community colleges are exhibiting their work at the LBCC Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd SW, through December 6. “Community Ground v.2” fills three galleries on campus, with over 100 works of art in a wide array of media, including painting, ceramics, metal-smithing, photography, drawing, mixed media and installation art.  The traveling exhibit is intended to celebrate the work of teaching artists and the role their art plays as a source of inspiration to their students and the community.  The exhibit at LBCC is the second of three shows that grew out of collaboration between the three colleges. The first show was held at Clatsop last January, and the third will be held at Mt. Hood in 2014. LBCC Preschool Cooperative

Fall term enrollment is underway for Linn-Benton Community College’s Preschool Cooperative in Philomath. LBCC’s Foundation Donates $150k for Dynomometer

Linn-Benton Community College’s Foundation donated $150,000 to the college’s Advanced Transportation Technology Center for purchase of a dynamometer to use in its new automotive training center. The dynamometer diagnostic tool used in automotive service will be the only one of its kind between Vancouver, BC and San Francisco.
